Dear Burnett Elementary School Families,

I am Marketa Croom, your new excitedly appointed Principal of Burnett Elementary School. I’ve had a chance to meet many of you and your children, and look forward to continuing to build strong relationships with all of you in the upcoming year.

I’m very passionate about education and elated to partner with you to provide our students with a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality elementary school experience. As the parent of two sons and one daughter ages 19, 13, and 10, I recognize the importance of a strong home-school connection. Parents are every child’s first teacher and I believe that by working together, we can make sure your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs are nurtured and met.

Before joining Burnett, I served in a variety of teaching and educational leadership roles over the past 18 years, primarily in Fulton County Schools. Some of the roles I have held include classroom teacher, early intervention teacher, mentor, and grade level coach, administrative assistant, and assistant principal. My academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, Master of Arts in Education, and an Educational Specialist in Leadership and Supervision.

As we enter this new school year, it is critical to note, our staff understands the power in being “Champions for Children.”  I believe that great schools are the results of great teachers, so my primary objective will be to ensure that every student is receiving high-quality, personalized instruction from every teacher at Burnett. We will be engaging in conversations around the importance of a growth mindset, both for ourselves and students. Despite obstacles that may arise, we must always believe in our ability to rise above challenges and come out stronger on the other end. In doing so, we are our Best Under Every Situation in character, conduct, attitudes, and actions.  I will be providing teachers with feedback on their instruction, access to professional development, and reaching out to parents for support with academic and behavioral concerns to ensure our students are prepared to be critical thinkers and doers for college and 21st century careers.

Each year brings positive change. This includes a few additions to our staff. We are delighted to welcome Maria Cooper (Kindergarten), Tamekia Powell (First grade), Mary Lemon (Second grade), Nancy Bass (Fourth grade), Karen Clark (Program for Exceptional Children), Samantha Remondelli (Program for Exceptional Children), Jennifer Johnston (Program for Exceptional Children), Whitney Forsh (Art), and Amanda Skinner (Media). Each new member brings a solid skill set and a gentle, sensitive approach to meeting the needs of our children. We are fortunate to have them!

In closing, thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to ensuring that Burnett remains a celebrated and successful school is awe-inspiring. It is my honor and privilege to serve as your new principal.  Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know…the best is yet to come!

Warmest Regards,

Marketa Croom
