The Cougars won the Area 4-AAAAA Tournament last month and qualified for the Georgia High School Association Golf State Championship Tournament for the first time in school history.

Alexander golfers shot a 313 and beat Rome by nine strokes to win the area tournament April 21.

Senior Hayden Canary finished as the runner-up individually with a 2-under-par 70. Junior Colt Gibson shot a 75 to finish fourth individually.

For the season, the boys golfers finished with a 7-3 overall record in match play, which included competition in several tournaments.

Coach Ben Robinson said his team ran away with the County Championship, with Gibson shooting a 78 to take the individual county title and Canary taking second overall with a 79.

The Cougars' best event so far was at Oak Mountain where they shot 3-over par as a team at 147 against Central-Carroll in a nine-hole match for a new school record.

Alexander's girls finished the season with a 13-3 record in match play and won the County Championship. Junior Braylee Clark won the individual County Championship and freshman Emma Slatton finished as runner-up. They finished seventh overall at the area tournament.

For the boys, the opportunity is there to make a historic season even more special at the state tournament May 19-20 at Jekyll Island.

Robinson said his Cougars will face a strong field that includes Milton, Creekview and Coffee — all of which are capable of playing at or under par.

"Our goal at the beginning of the season was to finish in the top five as a team," Robinson said. "We have put ourselves in position to make this happen, but it will take two days and 36 holes of our best golf to make that happen. We are extremely capable. Hayden Canary's goal at the beginning of the season was to individually win the tournament. He is peaking at the right time. He has been playing his best golf the last two weeks. He will be pushed by Colt Gibson, who thrives in competition. Tyler Canary and Ricky Thomas have also been playing very well lately. I can't wait to watch everything unfold."
