Studying scientific theories recently became an innovative experience for sixth-graders at Mason Creek Middle School. The young scholars created food-based models representing three major theories of the universe, explaining how evidence leads to changes in scientific understanding over time.
They used various food items to create the lab, modeling the geocentric theory, heliocentric theory and big bang theory. The project made abstract concepts hands-on, fun and memorable.
“Our goal was to give students a creative way to connect with big scientific ideas,” said science teacher Jalen Lumpkin.
“When they can see, touch, and even taste the models, it sticks with them and makes science come alive,” he added.
