Chapel Hill girls basketball coach Ivan Atkins said he’s expecting his team to take a “big leap” in hisCHHS girls player making a layup second season at the helm.

The Lady Panthers have seven key returners from last year: juniors Cameron Terry (G), Zakhiyah Thompson (G/F) and Bryale Thomas (C), and sophomores Kendall Copeland (G), London McClure (F), Jamayia Giles (F/C) and Kaitlyn Mercier (G/F).

“Our sophomore group this year played varsity last year as freshmen so they are expected to grow mentally and take on a more leadership role,” Atkins said.

Key newcomers include sophomore guard K’Maria Hill and senior guard Cierra Jefferson, both of whom were promoted from the JV team.

Atkins said his team has the talent to compete and “make some noise in the region.” His players agree.

"I think we are going to shock some people," McClure said. Added Thompson: "We're going to open people's eyes this season."
