The Kids Robotics Workshop at Legacy Arena gave Douglas County School System students theStudents work on a robot at the Robotics Workshop chance to explore robotics alongside industry and STEM experts. Supported by a collaboration with Google and the REC Foundation, the recent event showcased how hands-on learning and community partnerships can spark curiosity and confidence in young learners.

“When industry leaders like Google partner with us to invest in our students’ future, it opens the door to incredible possibilities,” said Douglas County Schools Superintendent Dr. Trent North. “These hands-on experiences not only introduce students to cutting-edge technology but also highlight the innovation happening right here in our community.”

One student summed up the excitement of the day as he and his friends put the finishing touches on their robot — a claw-machine model they planned to enter in competition.

“I’m having a great time,” he said, as his friends watched their robot work through the course.

Teachers who attended said the workshop offered students a meaningful chance to engage with STEM in a way that felt both exciting and accessible.

“The exposure for our kids is great,” one teacher said, noting how the hands-on environment and support from industry volunteers helped students see new possibilities for themselves.

This is the second year the event has been held at Legacy Arena. It is part of Google’s $10 million commitment to introduce 300,000 students to AI and robotics, with a focus on the communities where it operates.
