Heroes Among Us honorees with Superintendent Dr. North and Board Members.

The Douglas County School System recently hosted Heroes Among Us, Frank Clay receiving his award from Superintendent Dr. North.honoring local veteran educators and community heroes. The powerful community celebration recognized four teachers who previously served in the United States Armed Forces, along with two local veterans who continue to make a meaningful difference in their communities. 

Atlanta News First meteorologist and proud DCSS graduate JD Disharoon hosted the event, which featured entertainment by the Haberdashers, and a special performance by Grammy Award-nominated gospel artist Bishop William Murphy. 

"We were thrilled to host this special concert celebrating the contributions of our veterans,” Douglas County Schools Superintendent Dr. Trent North said. “The Douglas County School System has tremendous respect for those who have served our country and who now serve our students and the community.”

Dr. North added: “This event created an opportunity for our students to honor the sacrifice, courage and dedication of our veterans. These heroes represent the levels of service and commitment that we hope to teach all our students."

Edgewood Brass entertained the crowd with a patriotic performance, including "America the Beautiful" as well as a special Armed Forces Tribute. Audience members representing each branch of the military stood to be honored as their respective themes were played, creating one of the more memorable moments of the event.

Community Hero Honoree Frank Clay expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. 

"As a Veteran, I have participated in many Veterans Day programs, and I must saySuperintendent Dr. North with Bishop Murphy the Heroes Among Us was a very touching acknowledgement,” he said. “It allowed me to be proud of myself as a Veteran in the community, where I try to display each day the values of integrity and excellence which I learned in the military.” 

“I appreciated that people got to know some important details about the journey we as veterans have embarked upon while in the military through the video that was shown, especially my grandchildren. From seeing our personalized banner with our pictures as we entered the venue, to going on stage to accept our award, the evening will always be an amazing and uplifting memory for me."

Heroes Among Us was produced by Ashley Cleveland and Sandra Chandler, who were honored to help bring the meaningful tribute to life. They expressed deep appreciation for all who made the event possible. 

The celebration took place on Friday, Nov. 7, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Legacy Arena.
