Holly Springs students and staff wear costumes for One School, One Book event

Holly Springs Elementary students recently wrapped up an exciting week of learning as students participated in their first One School, One Book read-aloud of “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown. Thanks to proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair, every student and staff member received a copy of the book to enjoy together throughout the second nine weeks of school.

To add to the literary excitement, students had the opportunity to participate in a spirit week focused on themes highlighting book’s concepts of exploration, nature and survival. As the week concluded, students showcased their creative interpretations by dressing as vocabulary words from the story in a Vocabulary Parade. The fun-filled event was inspired by professional development led by Metro RESA’s Dr. Tamara Holloway and supported by the school’s instructional lead teacher, LaKeia Carter.

“It has been heartwarming to see students engaged in discussions about the book and to see their excitement,” said media specialist Kerry Harbin. “More fun activities are on the way centered on the book’s themes for family participation as the school wraps up the read-aloud fun in time for the holiday break.”

Students and teachers continue to engage in intentional read-aloud strategies as part of the School Improvement Plan, and families are encouraged to join in on the fun as Holly Springs continues to build a strong culture of literacy and learning.
