New Manchester High School recently held a schoolwide Water Walk to raise awareness about the global water crisis and support communities that lack access to clean drinking water, according to Dr. Latoya Thomas, who coordinated the event.
Students and staff walked carrying gallon jugs of water to simulate the daily reality faced by millions around the world who walk long distances each day just to access water.
The event was coordinated by Thomas and the NMHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter and included participation from faculty, CTAE programs and school administration.
The initiative also served as a fundraiser in partnership with charitywater.org, a nonprofit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries.
A total of $620 was raised to directly support sustainable clean water solutions.
"We wanted to give our students a tangible, visible experience that connects hands-on action to impact," Thomas said. "The Water Walk helps students see and feel the weight of what so many communities experience daily, and it gives us an opportunity to make a difference."
Thomas said the Water Walk exemplifies the school's commitment to service, compassion and meaningful learning beyond the classroom.
