In support of Georgia’s Apply to College Month initiative during November, the Douglas County High School counseling department hosted Apply to College Week at the school the week of Nov. 17.
The week kicked off with Military Monday (a military information fair featuring representatives from each branch of the military), instant decision events with Georgia Southern University and Georgia Highlands College, and $how Me the Money Monday financial aid help sessions.
“Each day of the week provided something different to engage seniors in the college application and financial aid process,” said Principal Kenja Parks. College themed days, free college application events, instant decision events, on-the-spot scholarship offers, a parent financial aid night, and a field trip to Kennesaw State University rounded out the week.
A total of nine colleges were represented for the on-site events including Georgia Southern University, Georgia Highlands College, Allen University, Tuskegee University, Fort Valley State University, Georgia State University, West Georgia Technical College, the University of West Georgia, and Columbus State University.
“Allen University offered over $621,000 in on-the-spot scholarship offers,” Principal Parks noted. “129 Students participated in application events and submitted 310 college applications; and 40 students attended the field trip to Kennesaw State University!”
DCHS lead counselor and organizer of the event Angelia Bruce declared,“Apply to College Week is the best week!”
