The Douglas County School System Youth Art Show opened on Feb. 26 in the Magnolia Room at
Central Office. The month-long focus on the visual arts got a head start this year as the annual Youth Art Month is typically in March.
Student artists were accompanied by proud patrons as they browsed the expansive exhibits and stopped to pose for photos next to their works. Drawings, paintings, ceramics and mixed media pieces provided appeal to a wide variety of tastes among attendees spanning from the very young to more mature.
“It's so important to recognize and celebrate the talent of students and the dedication of art teachers who play such a crucial role,” said Tammy Morris, DCSS K-5 Art Specialist and the coordinator of the event.
Morris believes that art provides an outlet for self-expression and innovation, and helps to foster a love for learning. “Creative activities can make learning fun and meaningful,” she added.
Among the many benefits of art education are the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and building confidence. “Seeing their work appreciated can significantly boost students' self-esteem,” said Morris.”
