New Manchester High School was recently filled with energy and enthusiasm as family, friends,A DCSS student looks up at his mom with a smile as they two run a race during the Special Olympics. school leaders and community members gathered to celebrate the Douglas County School System’s Special Olympics.

Coordinated by the Program for Exceptional Children (PEC), the event showcased the remarkable talents of students through a variety of games and athletic competitions.

Cheryl Handley, Executive Director of the Program for Exceptional Children, expressed tremendous pride in the event’s growth and the positive impact it continues to have on participants.

”These phenomenal students prepare for this moment year-round, and we are deeply grateful and proud of everyone’s hard work and unwavering commitment to make it a reality,” she said.

“The Special Olympics creates a platform where every athlete can shine, barriers are broken and the true spirit of sportsmanship shines brightest,” she added.

The day began with opening ceremonies featuring athletes singing “The Star Spangled Banner”Three high school volunteers wearing green vests are pictured during the Special Olympics. and carrying the Olympic Torch. Volunteers and community members supported athletes throughout the event at various competition stations.

Participants competed in events such as the softball throw, long jump, track, motor skills activities and soccer. Kona Ice added to the celebration, providing a fun and festive treat for athletes.

As the day concluded, all athletes were recognized with ribbons, with additional awards presented to first-, second- and third-place finishers.
