Alexander sophomore gymnast Erin Johnson is a state champion!
Johnson scored a 9.6 to win the beam at the 2026 Georgia High School Association Class 6A Gymnastics State Championship on April 24 at the Buford Arena.
Johnson also placed second in the floor with a 9.7 and third in the all-around with a score of 37.425.
“I'm honored to represent my county as its first gymnast,” said Johnson, who became the first Douglas County School System gymnast to compete in a GHSA event when she stormed onto the state scene in 2025 as a freshman. “Becoming the beam state champion is a moment I'll always be proud of. It reflects a lot of hard work, dedication and support from my coach and school."
Coach Caitlyn Hackney called Johnson an “incredible gymnast” and said she has seen Johnson’s confidence grow in the beam and floor. She added that the gymnastics community has been welcoming to her and Erin.
“When the season started, I asked her what her goal was, and she said it was improvement and a ring,” Hackney said. “With her scores compared to last year, she has accomplished both. I am so incredibly proud of her and the work that she put in. I can't wait to see how she continues to grow and thrive in the gymnastics world.”
Looking ahead, Hackney said Johnson has the potential to sweep state gymnastics events in her junior and senior seasons.
