One hundred Eastside Elementary students capped a school year of consistent meals and support with a surprise celebration Tuesday, courtesy of the Sigma Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
The students all benefited from the sorority’s Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP), a program now in its third year at Eastside and fourth year total that provides them, free of charge, with meals and snacks to help meet their nutritional needs over the weekend during the school
year.
Sigma Omega Omega Chapter Vice President Marlene Anderson said the chapter has distributed 1,200 bags of food to students at Eastside since February.
Tuesday’s celebration included pizza and special prizes for the students.
“The CHIPP program has been a transformative force within our school community,” Eastside Interim Principal Anitra Paige said. “By addressing the fundamental need for consistent nutrition, we have seen a direct, positive correlation in student engagement, attendance, and overall well-being. When our students’ basic needs are met, their potential is limitless.”
Anderson added that the chapter remains committed to fighting food insecurity in the community.
“We want to make sure everybody has something to eat,” she said.
