On May 1, lunchrooms nationwide celebrated the hard work taking place in school cafeterias
. School Lunch Hero Day is held annually on the first Friday in May and was established through a partnership between the School Nutrition Association and Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of the "Lunch Lady" book series. The special day was created to highlight the vital role these professionals play in fueling young minds and bodies.
“We are grateful for the long hours, teamwork, kindness, and commitment the DCSS School Nutrition Department shows every single day,” said Executive Director of School Nutrition Danielle Freeman. “They are truly the heart of our cafeterias and an essential part of our students’ success and well-being. On this special day, we are excited to celebrate our amazing team.”
School Nutrition professionals showed up for work dressed in superhero capes along with their hero T-shirts to take part in the celebration. Additionally, some schools showered them with appreciation gifts to thank them for their tireless efforts each day.
From early mornings to busy lunch periods, these dedicated team members serve more than meals. They provide care, consistency, and encouragement that help DCSS students thrive each day.
